A cold front sweeping the East on Friday, October 30, 2026, will turn a summer-like day into jacket weather for Halloween night. From the Carolinas to the Midwest, local forecasts point the same way: warm today, temperatures in the 50s by the time kids head out to trick-or-treat on Saturday.
A warm Friday, then the drop
The contrast is what catches people off guard. In Raleigh, North Carolina, highs were expected to reach the low 80s on Friday, according to WRAL. In Philadelphia, NBC10 forecast highs 10 to 15 degrees above average before the front arrived in the afternoon with breezy northwest winds.
Behind it, the air turns cooler and drier. Philadelphia’s Halloween high sits around 60, with trick-or-treaters heading out in the 50s. Raleigh drops into the 60s on Saturday and into the 50s later in the evening. In northeast Indiana, 21Alive expects the low 60s at the start of festivities and the 50s after sunset.
New England gets the sharpest chill. The National Weather Service office in Boston said colder air arrives Saturday evening, with overnight lows from 25 to 35 degrees.
Not everyone gets the cold. Along the South Carolina coast, WBTW expects a mild, dry evening with trick-or-treat temperatures in the mid to upper 60s.
The good news: it stays dry
The front brings cooler air, not a washout. Forecasts for Philadelphia, Raleigh and the Myrtle Beach area all call for dry conditions on Halloween, and the NWS Storm Prediction Center doesn’t expect severe storms anywhere in the country on Saturday.
That means the decision for most families in the East comes down to one thing: layers.
How to dress for a 50-degree Halloween
Plan the costume around the coldest hour, not the warmest. Temperatures keep falling after sunset, so the end of the route is usually chillier than the start.
- Layer underneath. A long-sleeve shirt and leggings under the costume keep the look intact.
- Pick a costume that works with a jacket. Capes, hats and oversized pieces fit over a coat more easily than a fitted outfit.
- Bring a backup. A hoodie in the stroller or the car saves the night if the wind picks up.
Forecasts can shift by a few degrees in a day, so check the hourly forecast for your ZIP code at weather.gov on Saturday afternoon.
Before you finalize the costume, try it on with the jacket your kid will actually wear.
