Why This Day Hits Different for Latinos in the U.S. 🇲🇽🇺🇸
Okay, so let’s set the record straight, Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexican Independence Day. We’ve all seen the memes and the misinformed party invites. But behind the tacos, beer and tequila, lies a true story of pride, resilience and culture that deserves much love and respect.
🛡️ Flashback to Cinco de Mayo 1862: A small, under-equipped Mexican army led by General Ignacio Zaragoza pulls off a miracle win in Puebla against the mighty French forces. Yeah, France with all their fancy cannons and horses. Mexico said: “Today was not the day.” This feat, while not changing the course of the war in the long run, as France occupied Mexico two years later, did become a symbol of resistance to foreign oppression.
Funny thing? In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is mostly celebrated in state Puebla. But in the U.S. It’s a full-blown cultural holiday. Back in the 60s, Chicano activists embraced the day as a shoutout to Mexican-American identity and pride.
Then in the 80s? Brands like Corona and Modelo saw the party potential, and the rest is (very profitable) history. Just in 2013, According to a Nielsen report people spent over $600 million on beer for Cinco de Mayo . Wild, right?
Beyond the commercial aspect, Cinco de Mayo is an opportunity to celebrate Mexico’s cultural richness, so much so that several American cities organize parades, mariachi concerts, folkloric dances, and food fairs honoring Mexican traditions. One of the largest events is held in Los Angeles, “Fiesta Broadway,” an event that brings together major artists and professionals from the Latino community.
Although it has been widely commercialized, Cinco de Mayo represents a struggle for dignity and sovereignty. It is a reminder of how a history of resistance can be combined with cultural identity to create moments of shared pride. Whether in the state of Puebla or anywhere in the United States, this holiday remains an opportunity to reflect, celebrate, and learn about Mexican heritage.
