The legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band proves once again that tradition is an institution, a living organism that breathes, evolves, and vibrates with each generation. From the cultural heart of New Orleans, the group continues to expand the language of jazz without losing the essence that made it a global icon. đ·
Mardi Gras returns to The Soraya with one of the most authentic of New Orleans ensembles. Steeped in the history and musical traditions of the French Quarter for more than 60 years, Preservation Hall Jazz Band taps into a musical continuum that stretches back to the city’s roots. As their name implies, the group is living history. đ
A year after the release of their latest album, âFor Fat Man,â by Preservation Brass (a branch of the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band), this album, released through Sub Pop Records, is dedicated to the memory of Kerry âFat Manâ Hunter, a longtime percussionist with Preservation Hall whose powerful and emotional style defined the bandâs spirit for years. His influence not only shaped the albumâs sound but also the cultural identity of the second-line music movement, a tradition deeply connected to the cityâs celebrations, farewells, and collective expressions. âFor Fat Manâ is a sound you feel before you hear it. From the first bass drum hit “BOOM “, the new album, For Fat Man, is not just heard, itâs physically experienced. The production was guided by cornetist Kevin Louis, who sought to capture the raw and authentic energy of the historic Monday night performances at Preservation Hall. đ„
The legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band represents a sonic chain that connects the past, present, and future of street jazz. Every drumbeat, every trumpet note, and every tuba vibration builds a universal message: music is community, it’s identity, and it’s healing. đč
