Silo is a sci-fi mystery television series that follows the lives of the last 10,000 people on Earth, who live confined within a massive, 144-story underground bunker. The premise: Residents believe the outside world is toxic, ruined, and deadly. The rules: Society is governed by strict regulations supposedly designed to protect them; speaking about the past or wishing to leave is forbidden. The production is based on Hugh Howey’s hit post-apocalyptic novel trilogy and streams on Apple TV+.
After three seasons of Silo, a theory is making the rounds: what if artificial intelligence isn’t trying to destroy humanity but rather protect it from ourselves? Think about it: 50 Silos, massive amounts of data, constant surveillance, manipulated memories, and a system capable of deciding when a Silo should be protected or eliminated.
Then there’s the mystery of Salvador Quinn: what did that famous Directive actually say? We know it involved erasing information and controlling memory, but the key piece is still missing: did Quinn make those decisions of his own volition, or was he following orders from the AI?
And then there’s the tunnel. Why is the system so obsessed with keeping anyone from reaching it? What are the other Silos hiding? A connection between them all? Or something much bigger? The gas in Silo 17 doesn’t help matters, either. If the system can release a lethal agent to wipe out an entire population, then perhaps the outside world was never the true enemy.
The enemy might be inside the Silo, the craziest part is that the idea of an ultra-high-tech bunker isn’t even that far-fetched. Underground facilities actual bunkers already exist today that can withstand nuclear attacks, featuring air filtration, backup power, surveillance systems, sensors, and even hydroponic farming. These isolated community environments are built with the threat of nuclear attack in mind, all to “save humanity.”
But what happens when an AI decides that, to save humanity, it has to sacrifice a part of it?
Maybe the big question in Silo was never “What’s out there?”
Maybe it was always:
“Who or what makes the decisions and why?” 👀
