The Perfect Chelada Recipe

The Chelada is a traditional Mexican drink that’s essentially beer combined with lime juice and salt. In this recipe, you’ll also have the option to add a splash of orange juice for a tangy-sweet twist that you’re sure to love.

This recipe is super simple—all you’ll need is your favorite beer, chilled and ready to go. You can use either a light (rubia) or dark (negra) beer, but the classic choice is a light beer, often Modelo®.

Ingredients:

  • 1 beer (brand of your choice)
  • Juice from 1 or 2 limes (depending on size)
  • Salt to taste
  • Ice
  • Optional: Orange juice for a sweeter twist, creating a variation that’s like an orange Chelada or Michelada.

The Origin of Chelada

In Mexico, the Chelada is famously used as a hangover cure. It’s common to enjoy a glass in the morning or midday. The drink’s name has two popular origin stories.

The first theory ties the word to the English term “chilled,” which evolved into “Chelada” over time. The second—and more widely accepted—origin suggests it comes from the combination of the words “chela” (a casual Mexican term for beer) and “helada” (cold). Regardless of the origin, what matters most is the refreshing taste you’ll experience when you try one.

So, don’t wait! Share this simple, delicious recipe with your friends and bring a taste of Mexico to your next party.

How to Make a Chelada

Step 1: Prepare your glass by wetting the rim with lime juice and dipping it into a plate of coarse salt or Tajín (choose your favorite brand).

Step 2: Add the remaining lime juice (and orange juice, if you’re experimenting) to the glass. Add salt to taste and mix well.

Step 3: Pour in your preferred beer and gently stir to combine.

To keep it cool, toss in a few ice cubes, and you’re good to go. Now you can enjoy the crisp, refreshing taste of a Chelada—perfect for those hot summer afternoons!.

For added flair, garnish with a slice of lime and sprinkle Tajín on the rim before adding the drink.

Chelada vs. Michelada: What’s the Difference?

The main distinction is that the Chelada doesn’t include “sauces” like the classic Michelada does. Micheladas typically include Worcestershire sauce, Maggi sauce, soy sauce, hot sauce, or even tomato juice.

In many countries, the Chelada is simply beer with lime, similar to what’s called a “clara” in Spain.

While this is the traditional Chelada recipe, feel free to experiment and add sauces to create your personalized “chelada-michelada” hybrid.

Salud!! 🍻
