Traveling these seasons feels a little more next-level. The reason? Apple has just teamed up with Google to let you store your passport directly in your Wallet. Yes, your official ID now lives alongside your bank cards, boarding passes, and concert tickets. Technology + travel = a winning combination. 🧳
What is a digital passport?
Think of your physical passport… but the smart version. A digital passport is an electronic and verified version of your document, securely stored in apps like Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. It’s like carrying your identity in the cloud, but with TSA-level protection. More and more airports in the United States, around 250 and counting are accepting this form of ID for domestic travel. So get ready, because checkpoints are becoming smoother, faster, and stress-free.

Available today, Digital ID is a new way for users to create an ID in Apple Wallet using information from their U.S. passport, and present it with the security and privacy of iPhone or Apple Watch.

How does it work? (Spoiler: It’s super easy)
- Quick Scan
With Google Wallet or Apple Wallet, you simply scan:
The security chip in your physical passport
The page with your photo - Selfie Verification Mode
Then take a selfie (and on Apple, a few head movements like “verify it’s you”). All to confirm that the passport really belongs to you. - Done!
In minutes, your digital passport is saved and ready to use at national security checkpoints.
The best thing about the digital passport ✈️
(Note: For international flights, you still need your physical passport, but this is already a giant step forward.)
Ultra convenient
Your identity in the same place where you already have everything: your phone. No extra bags, no stress, no “where did I leave my passport?”
Top-notch security
Includes biometrics, encryption, and direct verification from your device. More secure than carrying a physical document. 🔐
Eco-friendly
Less paper, less wear and tear, fewer replacements. Everything is more sustainable.
Important things to keep in mind:
Your physical passport is still required for international flights or in case of any issues with the digital version.
Acceptance depends on the state and airport, so it’s a good idea to check what can be used and where before you travel.
“In the future, users will be able to present their Digital ID at additional select businesses and organizations for identity and age verification in person, in apps and online,” Apple said.
