LEGO’s big Black Friday set this year is Godzilla, and it started as one fan’s idea. On November 3, 2026, LEGO announced LEGO Ideas Godzilla, a 5,363-piece model that costs $449.99 and goes on sale November 27, according to IGN. The design traces back to Matthew Esposito, a builder who goes by MattE720 and first submitted his Godzilla to the LEGO Ideas platform in 2023.
A rule change opened the door
LEGO Ideas lets fans post their own designs. If a project reaches 10,000 supporters, LEGO reviews it and may turn it into an official set.
Esposito’s first try came in 2023, when fan submissions were capped at 3,000 pieces. On September 30, 2024, LEGO Ideas raised that limit to 5,000. Projects already on the site stayed under the old cap, so a builder who wanted to go bigger had to delete the original and submit it again.
Esposito resubmitted his Godzilla in 2024 after the rule change, according to the official Godzilla website, and the new version reached 10,000 supporters.
In June 2025, LEGO approved it. In the video announcing the decision, LEGO Ideas Community Strategy and Engagement Manager Travis Barbour said the team could not wait “to translate it into brick form.”
The Hollywood Godzilla, in gray and blue
Esposito based his model on the Godzilla from Legendary’s MonsterVerse movies, such as Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In his submission, he wrote that he was “blown away by the new looks and appearances of Godzilla” in those films.
LEGO’s professional designers then worked with him on the final version, IGN reports. The result stands over 27.5 inches tall, with a skin of overlapping gray bricks and jagged dorsal fins in several shades of blue.
The tail swings left or right, and the head, arms, wrists and fingers all move. The set includes a tongue and a blue heat ray, so you can choose between a roar and an attack.
Bigger than the fans were allowed to build
At 5,363 pieces, the official set goes past the 5,000-piece limit that fans themselves must follow. It also tops 21373 Downton Abbey, the 4,711-piece build that Brick Fanatics called the biggest LEGO Ideas set of all time when it was revealed.
LEGO Godzilla goes on sale exclusively at the LEGO Store at 12:01 a.m. on November 27. Buyers from November 27 to 30, while supplies last, also get a free 359-piece Godzilla logo and footprint set. The set is rated for ages 18 and up.
If you have a build idea of your own, LEGO Ideas is where Esposito’s Godzilla started.
