Which Logo Matches Your Vibe: Republican or Democrat?

At first glance, these logos might look like they were whipped up by a savvy design agency, but their roots are way more old-school—they actually come from 19th-century political cartoons! Let’s dive into how these iconic symbols became the face of two major political parties in the U.S.

The Cartoonist Who Started It All

Meet Thomas Nast, the legendary cartoonist who gave us these iconic associations. Back in the day, Nast worked for Harper’s Weekly, a political mag that ran from 1857 to 1916. His cartoons weren’t just doodles—they were sharp, thought-provoking commentaries on the political chaos of the time.

In 1874, Nast published the cartoon “Third Term Panic,” which called out Republican President Ulysses S. Grant for entertaining the idea of a third term. In the cartoon, Nast used an elephant to represent the “Republican vote” and a donkey (symbolizing the New York Herald) to stir up chaos. And just like that, the GOP and Democrats found their spirit animals.

Why an Elephant for the GOP?

The elephant represents strength, stability, and dignity—qualities the Republican Party wanted to embody. In Nast’s Third Term Panic, the elephant was seen as powerful yet a bit clumsy and vulnerable, reflecting the political tensions of the time. Despite the cartoon’s satire, Republicans embraced the elephant, and it’s been their mascot ever since.

Why a Donkey for the Democrats?

The donkey’s roots go back to Andrew Jackson’s 1828 campaign when critics called him a “jackass” for his stubbornness. Instead of getting salty, Jackson owned it. But it was Nast who cemented the donkey as the Democrats’ symbol. Through his cartoons, the donkey came to represent stubbornness, perseverance, and humility—traits Democrats proudly adopted.

From Satire to Symbols

Here’s the plot twist: both parties leaned into Nast’s satire and turned it into their brand. The elephant and donkey have stuck around for over a century, becoming instant visual shorthand for Republicans and Democrats.
