NASCAR 2025: A new year at full speed

NASCAR, or the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing, has been a staple in American motorsports since 1948. It’s the country’s most popular stock car series, and its reach is now global. From Japan to Germany, NASCAR’s impact is undeniable, and this year 2025, the NASCAR Cup Series will make history by racing in Mexico for the very first time in June! The action will go down at the iconic Hermanos Rodríguez Racetrack, and if it’s anything like the success Formula 1 has had in the country, we’re in for an electrifying new chapter for the sport.

But NASCAR’s roots? They’re not what you might expect.

It all kicked off at Daytona Beach, which, in the early 20th century, became a mecca for speed lovers. The beach hosted 15 world land-speed records before the Daytona Beach Road Course even existed. Then, during Prohibition in the 1920s, something even more fascinating happened. Smugglers—aka “bootleggers”—started using modified cars to dodge the law while transporting alcohol. These cars were fast, sleek, and built for high-speed chases, and they soon became the inspiration for what we know today as stock car racing.

Even after Prohibition was repealed in 1933, these bootleggers didn’t hang up their driving gloves. Instead, they turned to racing, and by the late 1940s, this underground culture exploded into public spectacle with high-stakes races that attracted crowds across the southern U.S. Enter William France Sr. and Ed Otto in 1948. They saw the potential for something bigger—a fully organized racing league with clear rules and a proper calendar—and just like that, NASCAR was born.

Get Ready for the Roar of Engines. The NASCAR season is officially starting—The Clash is just the beginning. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual viewer, 2025 is shaping up to be a year of fierce competition, new international races, and some serious speed. So, buckle up, because it’s going to be one wild ride. Fast-forward to February 2, 2025, and the NASCAR Cup Series kicks off with The Clash, an event full of fast cars, big personalities, and lots of excitement. Let’s dive in:

Main Event: The Cook-Out Clash

  • When? Sunday, 8:00 p.m. ET
  • Where? Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, North Carolina (A tight 0.25-mile oval!)
  • Distance? 200 laps (50 miles) with a halfway break at 100 laps.

The Cook-Out Clash is a non-points race, today, the winner only gets a nice check and will have to wait until the Daytona 500 oval on February 15 to start scoring points. And for the first time since 1971, NASCAR’s Cup Series is back at Bowman Gray, one of the sport’s most legendary short tracks. Chase Elliott will start from the pole, while last year’s champion, Joey Logano from Team Penske, will look to defend his crown.
